What I am feeling…

Righteous Indignation, Sorrow, Compassion, Compelled…Why?

Call + Response

This film; this documentary, wrecked me. I think it would wreck you too.

Did you know that there are 27 million slaves worldwide-more than anytime in history…80% are women & as many as 50% could be children…slave traders made more than google, Nike, and Starbucks combined last year…

As i sat there and witnessed girls that couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 years old talking to a “customer” about what they could do I couldn’t help but see images of my daughter flash through my head. As I watched a man talk about how he was taken as a child slave to fight in a war in Africa at the age of 8 I couldn’t help but think of my 9 year old boy running around with a machine gun n his hands…

Then the thought, “why me?” Why did I get to be born in America to a middle-class family who loved me, cared for me, and shared God with me while these kids are “Born Into Brothels” and other ungodly situations. I don’t know why but I did and now I am responsible to take the knowledge I have been given and the freedom I have and the love I have experienced to help bring justice to these in need.

“Justice is what love looks like in public.”

Watch this movie…I dare you. We had intentions of watching the Changeling but decided on this instead…we made the right decision. Don’t just think about it, do it! Watch it, watch it, watch it…then ask yourself, “What is my response?”

P.S. if you like music, this also has some of the best music in it…

Thanks for a great posting. I understand how coming to grips with the size of modern slavery can leave you feeling wrecked. But there’s an interesting paradox about the 27 million slaves in the world – yes, it is a huge number, the largest ever in human history, but it is also the smallest fraction of the human population to ever be in slavery.

Likewise, the amount of money slaves pump into the world economy is big, around $5 billion a year, but it is also the smallest fraction of the global economy to ever be represented by slave labor.

The truth is that slavery has been pushed to the edge of its own extinction and working together we can tip it over the brink. I hope you’ll visit and share our website –, and maybe look at my book on how we can bring slavery to an end in 25 years, it is called: Ending Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves.

All best wishes,
Kevin Bales
